North America Wastewater Recovery System Market Size
The North America wastewater recovery system market was valued at USD 16 billion in 2024 and is estimated to reach USD 36.3 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 8.4% from 2025 to 2034. The region is witnessing remarkable growth due to numerous government initiatives and investments for developing water infrastructure, supporting sustainability, and considering environmental issues.
Strong environmental regulations are forcing industries to implement wastewater recovery systems. The Clean Water Act requires the treatment of wastewater to be discharged in accordance with certain standards, forcing industries to install new treatment technologies. Moreover, EPA Effluent Guidelines provide specified national criteria for the discharge of wastewater from various facilities. Under this regulatory system, industries not only have to protect the environment, but also face the challenge of recovering harmful waste economically.
The American government has commenced the Procedures for the Funding of Water Recovery, Wastewater Management, and other infrastructure development projects. A State/Federal partnership, the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF), offers towns low-interest loans and grants for enhancing water quality and wastewater treatment facilities. For example, in 2024 and beyond, the EPA allocated USD 1.638 billion to the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, out of which USD 787 million is set aside for Community Project Funding Items, specifically municipal water infrastructure projects.
As a push to address their respective areas' local water supply and environmental needs, state governments have been increasing expenditures in the construction of wastewater recovery plants. In California alone, recurring droughts spurred the creation of the Onsite Water Reuse Program, which aims to encourage water reuse by having on-site water treatment systems installed in new and existing constructions.
North America Wastewater Recovery System Market Trends
North American aging wastewater infrastructure is a big issue, and it has led to the laying out of huge sums in modernization efforts. For instance, in June 2024, the U.S. Department of Commerce allocated USD 5 million for project that involves wastewater infrastructure Dakota, to boost natural disaster resilience and to support future industrial development. All these investments will play a critical role in upgrading existing infrastructure and integrating new wastewater recovery systems.
The need for effective and sustainable wastewater treatment technologies is driving the implementation of newer technologies like membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, and ion exchange systems. These technologies are capable of higher contaminant removal efficiency and allow valuable resources such as nutrients and energy to recover from wastewater example, in September 2023, PPG achieved greater vertical integration by adding an oil-removing ultrafiltration membrane which enhances the possibilities of water reuse to their pre-existing microfiltration membrane line.
Local authorities are adopting these technologies to help comply with stringent policies. The USA EPA's new policies on PFAS require utilities to upgrade their treatment processes. Wastewater treatment plants are looking into the use of renewable energy to make the plants sustainable and reduce expenses.
Wastewater treatment plants are making greater use of renewable energy sources to turn themselves into sustainable and cost-saving operations. A prime example is Philadelphia Water Department's Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant, which utilizes biogas cogeneration to generate heat and electricity from methane gas produced as a byproduct during sewage treatment.
North America Wastewater Recovery System Market Analysis
North America Wastewater Recovery System Market Share
Top 5 companies in the North America wastewater recovery systems industry include Kemco Systems, Evoqua Water Technologies LLC, Pall Corporation, Calgon Carbon Corporation, and Veolia, gathering around 30% market share. These companies have established and invested in global networks or partnered with other allies for the promotion of connectors at ever-increasing technology levels.
The intense growth of the industry by the major market players as regards relationships & contracts as well as their constant technological advancements heavily influences their supremacy in the field. As a reference, in January 2025, Veolia Water Technologies unveiled its CaptuRO reverse osmosis (RO) technology for industrial use. The new system allows plants to significantly minimize their use of mains water, while reducing the amounts of water sent to drain by recovering as much as 98% of the permeate.
