North America Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures Market Size
The North America bathroom plumbing fixtures market was valued at USD 15.9 Billion in 2024 and is estimated at USD 16.6 Billion in 2025. It is projected to reach USD 27.8 Billion by 2035, expanding at a 5.3% CAGR from 2026 to 2035.
North America Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures Market Key Takeaways
Market Leader: Kohler Co. led with over 19.2% market share in 2025.
Leading Players: Top 5 players in this market include Kohler Co., Fortune Brands Innovations, Masco Corporation, LIXIL Corporation, American Bath Group, which collectively held a market share of 61.3% in 2025.
The market declined at a historic CAGR of -3.1% from 2022 to 2025 as high mortgage costs deferred both home purchases and discretionary renovation work. U.S. housing starts fell from 1.55 million in 2022 to approximately 1.41 million in 2023, while 30-year mortgage rates averaged 6.81% in 2023 and 6.72% in 2024.[1]U.S. Census Bureau - Monthly New Residential Construction, December 2023 Annual Summary, January 18, 2024 - census.gov. [2]Freddie Mac - Primary Mortgage Market Survey Archives - freddiemac.com Harvard's remodeling indicator had already projected a 7.7% decline in annual owner expenditures through the third quarter of 2024, underscoring the pressure on replacement-led fixture purchases.
The recovery case is less dependent on a return to the 2022 construction cycle than on the depth of the installed base. The median age of U.S. housing reached 44 years in 2023, creating recurring demand for plumbing replacements, accessibility upgrades, and bathroom reconfiguration even when new construction is uneven. At the same time, WaterSense specifications make efficiency a product-selection criterion rather than a niche attribute: labeled toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush or less, versus the 1.6-gallon federal benchmark. That combination favors manufacturers able to serve both contractor-led replacement demand and higher-value upgrades in faucets, showers, and electronic sanitary ware.
GMI Analyst View
The USD 16.4B-to-USD 27.8B trajectory implies a change in the source of growth. Near-term volume recovery remains exposed to mortgage rates and housing-start timing, but the longer runway rests on replacement demand from an aging housing stock and on revenue mix shifting toward water-efficient, digitally controlled, and design-led fixtures. Companies with broad contractor specifications and credible premium offerings can capture both cycles; suppliers concentrated in discretionary big-ticket products face greater exposure when remodeling budgets tighten.
The market's previous contraction also clarifies the competitive requirement for the forecast period. Growth will not accrue uniformly to all fixtures or channels. Products that solve a code, water-use, hygiene, or accessibility need can sustain replacement demand, while products purchased primarily for aesthetic refreshes remain more sensitive to financing conditions and installation costs.
Key Drivers
Residential repair and remodeling is the market's principal stabilizer. The USD 7.0B residential repair-and-remodel component in 2025 benefits from homes reaching plumbing, finish, and accessibility replacement points rather than relying exclusively on housing starts. Aging-in-place is becoming a concrete design input: 75% of adults aged 50 and over want to remain in their current homes, and 72% report plans for bathroom modifications such as grab bars or non-slip surfaces.[3]AARP - 2024 Home and Community Preferences Survey, December 10, 2024 - aarp.org This raises the value of comfort-height toilets, walk-in bathing, low-threshold showers, and fixtures that can be installed without full-room reconstruction.
Water efficiency and connected controls are adding a second layer of demand. WaterSense Version 2.0, effective July 1, 2025, retained the 1.28-gallon-per-flush ceiling for qualifying tank-type toilets, including dual-flush models.[4]U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - WaterSense Specification for Tank-Type Toilets v2.0, May 2024 - epa.gov In commercial settings, WaterSense-labeled flushometer toilets are also limited to 1.28 gallons per flush. Compliance and operating-cost considerations therefore support replacement of older fixtures, while sensor faucets, digital shower controls, and smart toilets give manufacturers a way to add convenience and hygiene features to regulated efficiency propositions. Industry design professionals identified digitally controlled shower systems as a leading emerging smart-home trend, and reported increasing interest in smart technologies relative to two years earlier.
Construction recovery remains important, particularly for builder-grade products and commercial installations. Builder confidence improved late in 2024, with expectations for future sales reaching 66 in December, followed by a January 2025 forecast for a slight gain in single-family housing starts.. The structural demand gap is also material: Realtor.com estimated a U.S. housing shortage of approximately 3.8 million homes in 2024. Bathroom fixture suppliers gain only after units advance through construction schedules, but the backlog supports the medium-term base for toilets, faucets, shower systems, and value-tier sanitary ware.
Key Restraints
Material exposure remains difficult to offset in standardized fixtures. The producer-price index for copper and brass mill shapes rose from 580.04 in December 2023 to 619.03 in December 2024 after earlier volatility, affecting brass valve bodies, faucet components, and finished metal products. Tariff-related building-material inflation compounds that exposure: Associated Builders and Contractors reported sharp increases in nonferrous-metal costs during 2025. Manufacturers can protect gross margin through finish rationalization, sourcing changes, and selective price increases, but those measures are harder to execute in the below-USD 100 and contractor-bid categories, where specifications and private-label alternatives constrain pricing.
Premium smart fixtures face a different barrier: total installed cost. A digital shower, sensor faucet, or integrated bidet toilet requires not only a higher equipment price, but potentially electrical work, controls integration, compatible valves, and specialized servicing. NKBA's market index identified supply-chain disruption and rising material costs as continuing industry challenges. In a renovation, that cost stack can redirect a consumer toward a conventional efficient fixture rather than a fully connected system. The result is a split market in which premiumization is strongest where homeowners or hospitality operators value design, hygiene, or water-management features enough to absorb installation complexity.
GMI Analyst View
The central tension is between a structurally favorable replacement cycle and a customer base that remains price-sensitive at installation. Premium smart fixtures have the clearest revenue upside, but their adoption is most exposed in direct-to-consumer and renovation projects where labor and compatibility costs are visible. The mid-range USD 100-USD 200 band and contractor-distributed standard fixtures are less exposed to feature-complexity risk, yet more vulnerable to metals inflation and price competition.
Manufacturers therefore need different operating responses by channel. In showrooms and specification sales, the commercial case should connect WaterSense compliance, lower water use, and serviceability to total ownership cost. In online and retail channels, installation guidance, compatible-component bundles, and reliable fulfillment matter as much as product novelty. A technology launch without an installable, serviceable route to market will have limited conversion outside the luxury segment.
North America Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures Market Segment Analysis
Product Type
Toilets and cisterns represent the largest product category at USD 3.7B and 22.6% of 2025 demand, but their 5.1% CAGR trails the overall market. Essential sanitation demand and replacement of older units protect the category, while the 1.28-gallon-per-flush WaterSense threshold directs innovation toward efficient flushing, compact designs, and integrated bidet functionality. The category's large installed base supports volume, but its mature nature limits growth relative to digitally enabled fixtures.
Faucets and taps account for USD 3.6B, or 22.0%, in 2025 and are expected to grow at 6.1% CAGR. Their faster growth reflects shorter replacement cycles, finish-led refreshes, and the ability to add touchless or water-monitoring features without remodeling the entire bathroom. Shower systems are forecast to grow still faster, at 6.5% CAGR, from USD 3.1B in 2025 to USD 5.8B by 2035. The preference for larger showers over bathtubs is commercially consequential: 55% of surveyed consumers considered shower size more important than having a bathtub.[5]National Kitchen & Bath Association and KBIS - 2026 Bath Trends Report, November 11, 2025 - nkba.org This shifts renovation budgets toward valves, controls, enclosures, showerheads, and drainage rather than standalone tubs.
Sinks and basins generate USD 2.6B in 2025 and retain relevance as visual anchors in vanity upgrades. Accessories grow from USD 1.4B to USD 2.5B by 2035, benefiting from lower-ticket online purchasing and coordinated renovation packages. Bathtubs grow more slowly, at 3.9% CAGR, because their role is increasingly concentrated in premium, wellness, and accessibility applications rather than broad primary-bathroom installations. Urinals decline at a -2.2% CAGR, from USD 0.5B to USD 0.4B. Waterless urinals are recognized by EPA as inherently water-efficient when they meet applicable ANSI and ASME standards, while WaterSense flushing urinals use 0.5 gallons per flush or less.[6]U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Clarification Guidance on Non-Water Using Urinals - epa.gov. That efficiency substitution, alongside softer office construction, reduces conventional urinal demand.
Material
Ceramic is the largest material category at USD 6.9B and approximately 42.1% of 2025 demand, supported by its role in toilets, sinks, and basins where cleanability, moisture resistance, and established production economics matter. Its 4.9% CAGR is consistent with a durable replacement category rather than a high-velocity design cycle. Metal, at USD 5.3B and 32.3% share, grows at 6.1% as faucets, shower systems, and premium finishes capture more of renovation budgets; however, its margin profile remains exposed to brass and other nonferrous inputs.
Stone and composite stone is the market's highest-growth material category, rising at a 10.0% CAGR from USD 1.2B to USD 3.1B. Its small base and premium positioning give it asymmetric upside in vanity basins, counters, and design-led bath packages, but also make it sensitive to high-end renovation spending. Plastic and fiberglass total USD 2.6B in 2025 and grow at 3.3%, retaining a practical role in shower bases, enclosures, and bathing products where weight, installation time, and value matter. Glass remains at USD 0.4B through 2035, reflecting its specialized use in enclosures and the limits of addressable volume.
Price Range
Below-USD 100 products remain critical for replacement, rental, builder-grade, and accessory purchases, where stock availability and installation simplicity can outweigh design differentiation. The USD 100-USD 200 tier is the market's broadest value proposition: it can incorporate improved finishes, efficient components, and recognizable brand quality without the full installed-cost burden of luxury systems. Above-USD 200 demand is the main vehicle for premiumization, particularly in connected showers, smart toilets, specialty faucets, composite basins, and freestanding baths. That tier creates margin opportunity but depends on dealers, designers, and installers capable of explaining feature value.
End-Use
Residential demand totals USD 10.6B in 2025, comprising USD 7.0B in repair and remodeling and USD 3.6B in new construction. Remodeling is the more resilient component because the housing stock itself generates replacement need; new construction is more directly linked to rates, permits, and builder confidence. Commercial demand totals USD 5.8B, split between USD 3.3B in new construction and USD 2.5B in repair and remodeling. Hospitality renewals can support commercial refurbishment because branded hotels typically undergo renovations on a seven- to ten-year cadence. Office-to-residential conversion can also create fixture demand in locations where projects proceed: nearly 70 million square feet of U.S. office space was undergoing conversion in early 2024.
Distribution Channel
Offline channels account for USD 12.3B, or 75.0%, of 2025 sales and remain indispensable for contractor specification, showroom selling, bulky products, and projects requiring coordinated valves, finishes, and installation support. Online sales account for USD 4.1B, or 25.0%, but are forecast to grow at 8.4% CAGR, more than twice the 4.2% offline rate. This shift favors products with standardized specifications and manageable freight profiles, including faucets, showerheads, accessories, and selected toilets. It also intensifies price transparency. Home Depot and Lowe's together held an estimated 44% dollar share of kitchen-and-bath fixtures in 2023 across their combined retail businesses, demonstrating the leverage of major retail platforms in both physical and digital routes to market.
GMI Analyst View
Three segmentation bets carry the most uneven risk-reward profile. Shower systems offer the strongest product-growth proposition because they combine consumer preference, controls technology, and renovation-led replacement; the commercial challenge is to make digital systems serviceable rather than merely feature-rich. Stone and composite stone offers the highest material-growth rate, but its opportunity is concentrated in premium renovation budgets and therefore more cyclical than ceramic or metal.
The third bet is online distribution. Its 8.4% projected CAGR can broaden access for emerging brands and accessories, yet it transfers more of the purchase decision to product information, reviews, freight execution, and post-sale support. Established brands retain an advantage in contractor channels, while digitally native specialists can gain where fit, finish, and installation uncertainty are low. Conventional urinals sit at the opposite end of the spectrum: the decline is not simply a weak-demand story, but a product-substitution outcome shaped by water-efficiency requirements and commercial building activity.
North America Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures Market Regional Analysis
United States
The United States represents USD 15.5B, or 93.3%, of North American demand in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 25.8B by 2035, growing at a 5.2% CAGR. Its scale makes remodeling conditions, housing finance, and retail distribution more influential than any single technology trend. The 44-year median age of housing provides a substantial replacement base, while the estimated 3.8 million-unit housing gap supports the eventual need for new installations. The path between those drivers is uneven: interest rates affect builder starts and discretionary renovation timing, whereas plumbing failures, accessibility needs, and water-efficiency replacements cannot be deferred indefinitely.
Smart-fixture adoption is becoming more commercially practical as domestic capacity expands. In August 2025, TOTO opened a USD 224M facility in Morrow, Georgia, designed to increase U.S. luxury one-piece toilet production capacity by 150% and produce up to 300,000 units annually.[7]PR Newswire - TOTO Opens USD 224M Georgia Manufacturing Facility, August 22, 2025 - prnewswire.com The investment is a signal that premium sanitary ware demand is sufficiently durable to justify localized production, but it also increases the importance of dealer, installer, and service networks for converting capacity into market share.
Canada
Canada accounts for USD 1.1B, or 6.7%, of 2025 demand and is forecast to reach USD 2.0B by 2035, a 6.2% CAGR that exceeds the U.S. rate. The growth differential reflects a housing-supply response to population policy as well as renovation needs in established urban markets. Canada set permanent-resident targets of 485,000 for 2024 and 500,000 for 2025 and 2026.[8]Government of Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada - Immigration Levels Plan 2024-2026, November 1, 2023 - canada.ca Meanwhile, CMHC reported 245,120 housing starts in 2024, up 2% from 2023. These are demand-supporting conditions for fixture suppliers, particularly where multifamily projects require space-efficient toilets, shower systems, and durable fittings.
Policy support adds a second channel. The Housing Accelerator Fund was designed to fast-track at least 100,000 permitted homes during its first three years, with participating communities estimating more than 750,000 permitted homes over the following decade. That does not translate directly into fixture shipments, but it improves the development pipeline. Water-conscious product positioning also carries particular relevance in Canadian procurement and renovation decisions, where low-flow fixtures and durable materials can align compliance, operating cost, and consumer expectations.
GMI Analyst View
The U.S. will determine regional volume and competitive share because it accounts for 93.3% of 2025 demand, but Canada provides a faster-growth allocation opportunity. A 6.2% Canadian CAGR versus 5.4% in the United States supports selective investment in local distributor relationships, multifamily-ready product ranges, and water-efficient specifications rather than a simple replication of U.S. premium strategy.
Regulation and channel structure shape the two opportunities differently. U.S. growth depends heavily on converting an aging-home replacement cycle through contractor and big-box retail networks, while Canadian growth is more connected to housing-supply initiatives and immigration-linked household formation. In both countries, WaterSense-aligned efficiency, dependable after-sales support, and installation compatibility are likely to matter more than standalone connectivity claims. Manufacturers that match product architecture to regional project types can defend margin as online price comparison expands.
North America Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures Market Share & Competitive Landscape
The top five suppliers collectively hold approximately 61.3% of the North American market, demonstrating a level of concentration that gives established brands meaningful advantages in contractor familiarity, retail placement, product breadth, and warranty support. Kohler leads with 19.2% share, followed by Fortune Brands Innovations at 13.8%, Masco Corporation at 11.4%, LIXIL Corporation at 10.8%, and American Bath Group at 6.1%. The concentration does not eliminate competitive pressure; it changes where it occurs. Incumbents compete for specification, shelf space, and premium design leadership, while smaller brands contest online discovery and specialized products.
Kohler's breadth across sanitary ware, faucets, showers, and bathing fixtures makes it particularly well placed to sell coordinated bathroom projects and smart products. Fortune Brands Innovations and Masco compete most directly in North American faucets through Moen and Delta, respectively. Fortune Brands reported USD 2,564.6M in 2024 Water Innovations net sales.[9]Fortune Brands Innovations - Full Year 2024 Earnings Release - ir.fbin.com, while Masco reported USD 4,853M in 2024 Plumbing Products sales. Their rivalry is consequential because faucets are both a high-frequency replacement category and a gateway to touchless, filtered, and connected water offerings. Brizo, Masco's premium Delta Faucet Company brand, extends that competition into design-led retail and showroom channels.
LIXIL competes in North America through American Standard and its wider water-technology portfolio; its Water Technology Business reported FY2025 revenue of ¥927.8B. Its April 2025 partnership with American Bath Group transferred the Salem, Ohio bathing facility to ABG and granted ABG exclusive rights to produce and distribute American Standard, DXV, and Eljer bathing products. The arrangement gives ABG a stronger platform in tubs and shower-related products while allowing LIXIL to focus its North American offering where its brand and technology assets are most differentiated. DreamLine's relevance is consequently heightened in online and enclosure-led shower demand, although channel growth still depends on freight quality and installation execution.
TOTO Ltd. competes at the premium end through WASHLET and high-design sanitary ware, reinforced by its Georgia capacity expansion. Geberit AG brings concealed-cistern and in-wall-system expertise; its 2024 net sales were CHF 3,085M. Hansgrohe SE is positioned around design-driven faucets and shower systems. Together, these top global players compete less on a single fixture than on the ability to combine water management, finishes, controls, and installer support across an entire bathroom.
Regional champions create the strongest pressure in specialized applications. Zurn Elkay Water Solutions, which reported USD 1,567M in 2024 net sales., and Sloan Valve Company are important in commercial water-management and flushometer applications. Jacuzzi Brands LLC is tied to whirlpool, walk-in, and wellness-oriented bathing; Mansfield Plumbing Products and Gerber Plumbing Fixtures LLC address contractor, builder, and wholesale channels; Watts Water Technologies brings commercial-system capability, with Americas sales of USD 1,664.9M in 2024 and added non-residential exposure through the Bradley and Josam acquisitions. American Bath Group's portfolio is especially relevant where aging-in-place, shower enclosures, and bathing replacement intersect.
Roca Sanitario S.A., Duravit AG, Villeroy & Boch AG, Brizo, Gessi S.p.A., Swiss Madison, and Aquatica Inc. occupy a more fragmented premium and specialized field. Roca, Duravit, Villeroy & Boch, and Gessi compete through design, ceramic, and luxury-faucet credentials. Brizo uses premium finishes and designer positioning within Masco's broader platform. Swiss Madison can benefit from online price transparency in modern, accessible products, while Aquatica targets freestanding tubs and high-end bathing. These players are unlikely to displace full-line leaders across all channels, but they can capture profitable niches where design specificity, digital merchandising, or premium bathing expertise outweighs the advantages of a broad distribution footprint.
