The U.S. Aircraft Drinking Water Rule requires covered carriers to maintain FAA-accepted operations and maintenance programs, conduct monitoring and prescribed maintenance activity, and complete periodic self-inspections. EASA certification specifications and airworthiness actions similarly constrain changes to water and waste installations on large aircraft. These requirements raise qualification costs, but they also establish recurring maintenance demand that is less sensitive to discretionary cabin-refresh budgets.

GMI Analyst View

The central investment case is not simply fleet expansion. Delivery constraints are extending the service life of aircraft that would otherwise have been replaced, shifting demand toward retrofit-qualified toilets, water-system components, and monitoring equipment. That shift favors suppliers able to combine platform certification, low-weight hardware, and field-service support rather than suppliers dependent solely on OEM production schedules.

Aftermarket growth also reflects an economic distinction within the product set. A certified replacement component can prevent operational disruption immediately, whereas a new line-fit program converts only when the aircraft leaves final assembly. Grey water reuse adds a third demand pathway: it can justify retrofit expenditure when water, weight, fuel, and emissions savings are sufficient to offset installation complexity. The forecasted moderation from the 2022-2025 recovery period to a 7.0% 2026-2035 CAGR is therefore consistent with a market moving from fleet reactivation toward a more durable mix of production, compliance, and maintenance demand.

Weight reduction is increasingly linked to operating economics. Diehl's InnoLite toilet uses CFRP construction and is approximately 20% lighter than conventional steel equivalents, while its A350 fresh-water arrangement eliminates a secondary tank. Diehl's grey water reuse system treats water from wash basins for toilet flushing, reducing the potable-water load and associated fuel burn on long-range aircraft. The commercial relevance rises with utilization because the saving recurs on every flight rather than only at installation.

Aging fleets intensify component demand. Drinking-water and airworthiness requirements prevent operators from indefinitely ignoring deteriorating systems, yet they do not automatically justify installation of the most advanced replacement architecture. The practical decision point is usually a scheduled maintenance event, when downtime, labor, certification activity, and cabin access can be consolidated.

That pattern explains the aftermarket's projected expansion from $458 million in 2025 to $958 million in 2035, at a 7.7% CAGR. Suppliers that reduce installation complexity through established platform approvals can convert maintenance necessity into technology adoption. The strongest opportunities lie where operating savings are measurable and repeatable, such as widebody grey water reuse, while compact-aircraft applications remain more exposed to weight, space, and payback constraints.

These segments do not respond to the same purchase trigger: reuse systems depend on a demonstrated operating-cost case, military demand follows procurement and sustainment cycles, and aftermarket purchases often follow maintenance findings or component failures. Suppliers able to serve all three pathways can reduce exposure to any one OEM production schedule, although widebody retrofit economics and platform approval breadth will determine which systems translate technical promise into volume.
