Cities around Europe are finding themselves riddled with issues such as increased traffic congestion, little parking spaces available, and an overloaded public transportation system; bicycles are rapidly becoming a feasible option for commuting to work in heavily populated, urban areas as a result of the ever-more-inefficient use of cars on the road, combined with regulatory crackdowns against car usage.
Though the cycling culture varies greatly across Europe with some countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands relying heavily on cycling as a form of transport. All of Europe is experiencing an upward trend with increasing levels of cycling participation. In 2023, approximately 14% of people living in urban areas across the EU cycled, although there has been a positive shift in cycling participation levels since the start of 2023. By 2025, we can expect to see an increase in bicycle use throughout Europe of 5% YOY from 2020, with a 6% increase in weekday bicycle usage and a 2% increase in weekend use compared to 2024.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Europe's bicycle industry, it has found itself to be more of an accelerant than a slowdown, as offenders of the lockdown rules and fear of using public transport immediately increased demand for both conventional and electric bicycles, which caused considerable supply shortages and delays in delivery times (2020 through 2021). Governments promptly began to develop new measures for the promotion of cycling throughout Europe.
Western Europe has taken the lead in adopting urban cycling as a transportation mode because of its well-established cycling infrastructure, dense city layouts, and supportive public policies. Countries such as the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and Belgium continue to have high levels of daily cyclists using their bikes for commuting, with e-bikes increasingly displacing traditional bikes for this purpose. The continued growth of this market is being driven by government investment in cycling networks, the integration of cycling with other forms of public transport, and corporate programs promoting sustainable commuting practices.
In Western Europe, the addition of dedicated cycling infrastructure in various countries including Poland, Czechia, Hungary and the Baltic states is causing urban cycling to become increasingly accepted as a valid mode of transportation. Although there are currently fewer e-bikes relative to standard bicycles in Eastern Europe, the number of e-bikes is increasing rapidly at a pace comparable to that of Western Europe. The combination of decreased costs for e-bike battery packs and increased quantities of e-bikes being adopted for commuting will result in continued growth of the Eastern European e-bike market.
Europe Bicycle Market Trends
Many European cities have begun to change how they will define urban mobility. To combat traffic congestion and lack of parking, municipalities are making substantial investments in cycling infrastructure with the goal of improving first and last mile connectivity. Some cities recognize bicycles as being a viable alternative to the saturation of traffic; therefore, many cities, such as Paris which has allocated USD 272 million for the creation of ~1,500 kilometers of bike lanes by 2026, have shifted away from developing cycling for leisure use but instead, will focus on providing transportation for commuting purposes.
More focus has been placed on shipping methods like cargo eBikes and speed Pedelecs instead of using regular leisure bikes in growing urban areas. These shipping options cater to business professionals and delivery services by providing a more effective and flexible way to travel through highly populated areas. With eBikes, commuters can travel much greater distances with less energy than by car, making them a viable transportation choice in cities with a high volume of traffic and limited parking availability.
The rising costs of fuel and high density in the cities provide an additional incentive for bicycles being a cost-effective option to use as part of your daily commute. For the past several years, bicycles and eBikes have been recognized as cost-effective, environmentally friendly transportation alternatives to using personal vehicles and being an economically advantageous form of travel. The trend of promoting cycling is strengthened by both national and European Union Policy along with funding grants like Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans which provides financial support and will allow travelling by bike to be integrated into a larger transportation system and support multi-modal transportation solutions.
The increase in populations living in Urban Centers in Europe is causing mobility needs to continue to grow. As of 2024 and based on data from the World Bank, approximately 75% of the European Union population will be living in Urban areas, which is causing a rise in congestion and a growing need for effective and timely transport options. The concentration of people living in urban centers is causing a growing demand for bicycles and eBikes as effective means of travel on congested roads with the least amount of time for travel.
