Semiconductor-based probes such as Butterfly's iQ3 consolidate broad imaging capability into a single handheld device, while AI-guided acquisition tools aim to reduce dependence on highly specialized sonography operators. The market's 8% forecast growth does not depend solely on greater device penetration. Its durability rests on a change in how ultrasound is embedded in care delivery: portable imaging is increasingly purchased as an operating capability that combines hardware, image storage, quality review, training, and AI-enabled measurement. This shifts purchasing authority beyond radiology departments toward emergency, anesthesia, critical-care, and outpatient service lines that can connect faster diagnostic decisions to workflow and reimbursement outcomes.
The central tension is that broader access can expand unit volumes while weakening hardware pricing. Aging populations and chronic disease raise the number of encounters in which focused imaging can be useful, but handheld competition is making image quality less exclusive to premium systems. Suppliers with credible clinical software, regulatory clearance, and enterprise integration are therefore better positioned to protect recurring revenue than suppliers relying only on device sales.

These capabilities can reduce training friction for focused examinations, although clinical governance and competency requirements remain necessary.
Aging contributes to demand intensity rather than simply patient counts. Older patients more frequently present with overlapping cardiac, pulmonary, renal, vascular, and musculoskeletal conditions. Traditional cart-based systems can cost substantially more than handheld devices, while total ownership cost also includes probe replacement, servicing, training, connectivity, and image-management infrastructure. A survey of ultrasound use in low- and middle-income countries identified equipment cost, access, and training as persistent barriers. This narrows the addressable market in public systems where imaging equipment competes with medicines, staffing, and basic infrastructure for limited budgets.
The constraint is most consequential where service networks are thin. A lower purchase price alone does not resolve downtime, repair logistics, consumables, or training continuity. Suppliers entering Latin America, rural Asia Pacific, and African markets must therefore match hardware pricing with local education and maintenance models if they are to convert unmet diagnostic need into sustained installed-base revenue.
Regulation also creates a meaningful entry barrier. Ultrasound devices regulated under FDA Class II requirements must generally meet 510(k) premarket requirements, and AI-enabled software adds validation, lifecycle-management, and post-market expectations. The European Medical Device Regulation imposes related obligations around clinical evaluation, monitoring, and device identification. In mature health systems, demand is increasingly tied to enterprise workflow, reimbursement, and AI-supported clinical expansion, supporting premium software and replacement revenue. In lower-income settings, the binding constraint is not clinical need but the combined cost of acquisition, training, repair, and governance. That difference makes a single global pricing strategy structurally weak.
Regulatory capability offers incumbents a temporary advantage as AI functionality becomes central to product differentiation. However, it will not eliminate handheld price pressure. The most resilient suppliers will pair cleared clinical features with training, image management, and service infrastructure; companies competing only on hardware price may increase device access but face a narrower path to durable margins.

Diagnostic devices generated approximately USD 2,637 million in 2025 and held 62.79% of market revenue. Their lead reflects the breadth of diagnostic POCUS use across cardiac assessment, obstetric evaluation, pulmonary examination, vascular access, trauma, and musculoskeletal imaging. AI-enabled automation is particularly important in this segment because it expands use beyond expert sonographers while preserving the requirement for clinician oversight.
Therapeutic devices accounted for USD 1,563 million, or 37.21%, of 2025 revenue. This category includes ultrasound-enabled treatment and procedural systems used in focused specialty settings. Its growth opportunities are tied to procedure-specific reimbursement, safety validation, and treatment monitoring rather than the broad diagnostic deployment model that supports diagnostic devices.
By Portability
Trolley-based devices held 63.41% of 2025 revenue, equivalent to approximately USD 2,663 million. Their continued lead reflects superior display size, multi-probe capability, workflow integration, and sustained performance during more complex or prolonged examinations. GE HealthCare introduced the Venue Sprint in September 2024, combining a tablet-format console with Vscan Air dual-probe connectivity and the Venue software platform. [5] Philips launched its Flash Ultrasound System 5100 POC in June 2025 for anesthesia, critical care, emergency, and musculoskeletal care.
Handheld devices represented 36.59% of 2025 revenue. Their strategic importance exceeds their current revenue share because they reduce the cost of deployment per clinician or per outpatient location. Comparative research has found that leading handheld devices perform differently across clinical views rather than establishing one universal image-quality leader. As a result, software features, total ownership cost, workflow integration, and training support increasingly determine purchasing decisions.
By Application
Emergency medicine represented USD 752 million, or 17.78%, of 2025 revenue. Trauma assessment, cardiac tamponade evaluation, pulmonary examination, aortic screening, and procedural guidance make POCUS operationally valuable where delays affect treatment decisions. Cardiology accounted for USD 798 million, or 18.87%, supported by focused cardiac assessment and AI-guided ejection-fraction estimation. A systematic review of critical-care ultrasonography found that ultrasound-guided volume management was associated with lower mortality at the longest reported time point, although outcomes remain dependent on clinical protocol and operator competence.
Obstetrics & gynecology was the largest application at USD 938.4 million, or 22.19%, in 2025. POCUS supports pregnancy-location assessment, fetal viability, gestational estimation, placental evaluation, and gynecologic examination. The International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology issued POCUS practice guidelines in 2025, strengthening the framework for training and appropriate clinical use. [6] Clarius received FDA clearance for its OB AI tool in June 2024, enabling automated fetal biometric estimation on handheld systems.
Urology generated approximately USD 476 million, or 11.27%, of 2025 revenue. Automated bladder-volume and prostate-measurement features are commercially relevant because they convert repetitive manual assessment into faster point-of-care workflow. Clarius received FDA clearance for Bladder AI in January 2024 and a later FDA-cleared Prostate AI capability. Vascular surgery accounted for approximately USD 458.7 million, or 10.84%, supported by vascular access, thrombosis assessment, and interventional workflow. Musculoskeletal applications represented 13.55%; portable ultrasound in ambulatory musculoskeletal consultations has been associated with fewer hospital referrals for injections and more procedures completed at the consultation site. Other applications accounted for 5.50%.
By End Use
Hospitals held the largest end-use share at 30.56% in 2025. Their procurement priorities increasingly include image archiving, credentialing, quality review, and integration with clinical information systems, not solely device performance. This favors vendors capable of supporting multi-department deployment.
Clinics accounted for USD 820.6 million, or 19.40%, of 2025 revenue. Handheld economics are particularly important in this setting because capital budgets rarely support high-end cart systems. Maternity centers represented USD 777.6 million, or 18.38%, reflecting sustained prenatal-monitoring demand and the formalization of obstetric POCUS practice.
ASCs generated approximately USD 1.0 billion and accounted for 24.04% of 2025 revenue. POCUS supports regional anesthesia, vascular assessment, and peri-procedural monitoring in outpatient procedure settings. Other end users, representing 7.62%, include field medicine, emergency medical services, diagnostic centers, and home-care settings. Vave Health launched its Universal Wireless Probe in March 2025 without subscription fees, targeting decentralized and individual-clinician use cases.

Segment performance is shaped by a practical divide between high-complexity imaging and high-distribution imaging. Trolley-based systems retain an advantage where multi-probe versatility, workflow integration, and extended use justify higher capital spending. Handheld systems, in contrast, are shifting deployment from department-level assets toward clinician-, clinic-, and field-level tools. The resulting market does not suggest a simple substitution cycle; it points to different purchasing criteria by care setting.
Obstetrics & gynecology, cardiology, and emergency medicine provide the strongest established application base because each combines repeatable protocols with a clear consequence for timing of care. The next incremental revenue opportunity lies in converting handheld access into governed utilization through training, archiving, and specialty-specific AI. Suppliers that can deliver this operating layer will have an advantage in ASCs and clinics, where portability alone is insufficient to secure institutional adoption.

The EU Medical Device Regulation makes compliance capability commercially material. The global point of care ultrasound market was valued at USD 4.2 billion in 2025, is estimated at USD 4.5 billion in 2026, and is projected to reach USD 9 billion by 2035, expanding at an 8% CAGR from 2026 to 2035.
Demand is underpinned by the large clinical burden of chronic disease: noncommunicable diseases caused more than 43 million deaths in 2021, including over 19 million cardiovascular deaths. [1] Population aging reinforces this demand because the global population aged 60 years and older is projected to rise from 1 billion in 2020 to 1.4 billion by 2030. [2]
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) places image acquisition and clinical decision-making in the same encounter. Its scope spans portable console and trolley-based systems, as well as handheld probes connected to mobile devices, used across emergency, cardiac, obstetric, urologic, vascular, and musculoskeletal care. The commercial value of the category lies in replacing selected transfers to centralized imaging with immediate, focused assessment at the bedside, in procedure rooms, and in outpatient settings.
Hardware innovation is changing the procurement case. Semiconductor-based probes such as Butterfly's iQ3 consolidate broad imaging capability into a single handheld device, while AI-guided acquisition tools aim to reduce dependence on highly specialized sonography operators. GE HealthCare's Caption AI on the Vscan Air SL, for example, provides probe-positioning guidance and automated cardiac measurements, shifting part of the product differentiation from transducer specifications toward software-supported workflow.
North America represented approximately 42.45% of global revenue in 2025, or about USD 1.7 billion. Europe accounted for USD 1.1 billion, equivalent to approximately 25.95% of the market. Asia Pacific represented approximately 22.17% and is projected to expand at about 8.4% CAGR, ahead of the global rate. Latin America accounted for approximately 5.76% of 2025 revenue, while the Middle East & Africa represented approximately 3.6%.
GMI Analyst View
The market's 8% forecast growth does not depend solely on greater device penetration. Its durability rests on a change in how ultrasound is embedded in care delivery: portable imaging is increasingly purchased as an operating capability that combines hardware, image storage, quality review, training, and AI-enabled measurement. This shifts purchasing authority beyond radiology departments toward emergency, anesthesia, critical-care, and outpatient service lines that can connect faster diagnostic decisions to workflow and reimbursement outcomes.
The central tension is that broader access can expand unit volumes while weakening hardware pricing. Aging populations and chronic disease raise the number of encounters in which focused imaging can be useful, but handheld competition is making image quality less exclusive to premium systems. Suppliers with credible clinical software, regulatory clearance, and enterprise integration are therefore better positioned to protect recurring revenue than suppliers relying only on device sales.
Key Drivers
Chronic cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic conditions create recurring clinical situations in which focused bedside imaging can guide triage, volume assessment, vascular access, and monitoring. The demand effect is especially strong where centralized imaging capacity is constrained relative to patient volume. POCUS does not replace comprehensive imaging in every case, but it can reduce the number of encounters requiring transport, scheduling, and radiology-suite coordination.
Evidence from ward-emergency care illustrates the workflow benefit. In one controlled study, protocolized bedside POCUS increased adequate diagnostic rates from 80% to 94% and reduced median time to first treatment from 34 minutes to 15 minutes. [3] The implication for hospitals is not merely faster examination; it is a stronger economic case for systems that can archive images, document use, and support institutional quality assurance.
AI-assisted acquisition is widening the addressable user base. The Butterfly iQ3 received FDA clearance in January 2024 with features including automated B-line counting and bladder-volume calculation. Clarius reported 16 deployed AI technologies at year-end 2025, including six FDA-cleared models. These capabilities can reduce training friction for focused examinations, although clinical governance and competency requirements remain necessary.
Aging contributes to demand intensity rather than simply patient counts. Older patients more frequently present with overlapping cardiac, pulmonary, renal, vascular, and musculoskeletal conditions. That clinical complexity increases the value of systems capable of multiple focused assessments during one episode of care, particularly in home-care, outpatient, emergency, and critical-care workflows.
Key Restraints
Capital cost remains a practical constraint despite handheld price reductions. Traditional cart-based systems can cost substantially more than handheld devices, while total ownership cost also includes probe replacement, servicing, training, connectivity, and image-management infrastructure. A survey of ultrasound use in low- and middle-income countries identified equipment cost, access, and training as persistent barriers. This narrows the addressable market in public systems where imaging equipment competes with medicines, staffing, and basic infrastructure for limited budgets.
The constraint is most consequential where service networks are thin. A lower purchase price alone does not resolve downtime, repair logistics, consumables, or training continuity. Suppliers entering Latin America, rural Asia Pacific, and African markets must therefore match hardware pricing with local education and maintenance models if they are to convert unmet diagnostic need into sustained installed-base revenue.
Regulation also creates a meaningful entry barrier. Ultrasound devices regulated under FDA Class II requirements must generally meet 510(k) premarket requirements, and AI-enabled software adds validation, lifecycle-management, and post-market expectations. The European Medical Device Regulation imposes related obligations around clinical evaluation, monitoring, and device identification. A national multispecialty survey found that training, regulatory concerns around AI, electronic medical record compatibility, and confidence in algorithmic outputs remained barriers to wider POCUS adoption. The interaction of drivers and restraints divides the market into two commercial models. In mature health systems, demand is increasingly tied to enterprise workflow, reimbursement, and AI-supported clinical expansion, supporting premium software and replacement revenue. In lower-income settings, the binding constraint is not clinical need but the combined cost of acquisition, training, repair, and governance. That difference makes a single global pricing strategy structurally weak.
Regulatory capability offers incumbents a temporary advantage as AI functionality becomes central to product differentiation. However, it will not eliminate handheld price pressure. The most resilient suppliers will pair cleared clinical features with training, image management, and service infrastructure; companies competing only on hardware price may increase device access but face a narrower path to durable margins.

By Type
Diagnostic devices generated approximately USD 2,637 million in 2025 and held 62.79% of market revenue. Their lead reflects the breadth of diagnostic POCUS use across cardiac assessment, obstetric evaluation, pulmonary examination, vascular access, trauma, and musculoskeletal imaging. AI-enabled automation is particularly important in this segment because it expands use beyond expert sonographers while preserving the requirement for clinician oversight.
Therapeutic devices accounted for USD 1,563 million, or 37.21%, of 2025 revenue. This category includes ultrasound-enabled treatment and procedural systems used in focused specialty settings. Its growth opportunities are tied to procedure-specific reimbursement, safety validation, and treatment monitoring rather than the broad diagnostic deployment model that supports diagnostic devices.
By Portability
Trolley-based devices held 63.41% of 2025 revenue, equivalent to approximately USD 2,663 million. Their continued lead reflects superior display size, multi-probe capability, workflow integration, and sustained performance during more complex or prolonged examinations. GE HealthCare introduced the Venue Sprint in September 2024, combining a tablet-format console with Vscan Air dual-probe connectivity and the Venue software platform. [5] Philips launched its Flash Ultrasound System 5100 POC in June 2025 for anesthesia, critical care, emergency, and musculoskeletal care.
Handheld devices represented 36.59% of 2025 revenue. Their strategic importance exceeds their current revenue share because they reduce the cost of deployment per clinician or per outpatient location. Comparative research has found that leading handheld devices perform differently across clinical views rather than establishing one universal image-quality leader. As a result, software features, total ownership cost, workflow integration, and training support increasingly determine purchasing decisions.
By Application
Emergency medicine represented USD 752 million, or 17.78%, of 2025 revenue. Trauma assessment, cardiac tamponade evaluation, pulmonary examination, aortic screening, and procedural guidance make POCUS operationally valuable where delays affect treatment decisions. Cardiology accounted for USD 798 million, or 18.87%, supported by focused cardiac assessment and AI-guided ejection-fraction estimation. A systematic review of critical-care ultrasonography found that ultrasound-guided volume management was associated with lower mortality at the longest reported time point, although outcomes remain dependent on clinical protocol and operator competence.
Obstetrics & gynecology was the largest application at USD 938.4 million, or 22.19%, in 2025. POCUS supports pregnancy-location assessment, fetal viability, gestational estimation, placental evaluation, and gynecologic examination. The International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology issued POCUS practice guidelines in 2025, strengthening the framework for training and appropriate clinical use. [6] Clarius received FDA clearance for its OB AI tool in June 2024, enabling automated fetal biometric estimation on handheld systems.
Urology generated approximately USD 476 million, or 11.27%, of 2025 revenue. Automated bladder-volume and prostate-measurement features are commercially relevant because they convert repetitive manual assessment into faster point-of-care workflow. Clarius received FDA clearance for Bladder AI in January 2024 and a later FDA-cleared Prostate AI capability. Vascular surgery accounted for approximately USD 458.7 million, or 10.84%, supported by vascular access, thrombosis assessment, and interventional workflow. Musculoskeletal applications represented 13.55%; portable ultrasound in ambulatory musculoskeletal consultations has been associated with fewer hospital referrals for injections and more procedures completed at the consultation site. Other applications accounted for 5.50%.
By End Use
Hospitals held the largest end-use share at 30.56% in 2025. Their procurement priorities increasingly include image archiving, credentialing, quality review, and integration with clinical information systems, not solely device performance. This favors vendors capable of supporting multi-department deployment.
Clinics accounted for USD 820.6 million, or 19.40%, of 2025 revenue. Handheld economics are particularly important in this setting because capital budgets rarely support high-end cart systems. Maternity centers represented USD 777.6 million, or 18.38%, reflecting sustained prenatal-monitoring demand and the formalization of obstetric POCUS practice.
ASCs generated approximately USD 1.0 billion and accounted for 24.04% of 2025 revenue. POCUS supports regional anesthesia, vascular assessment, and peri-procedural monitoring in outpatient procedure settings. Other end users, representing 7.62%, include field medicine, emergency medical services, diagnostic centers, and home-care settings. Vave Health launched its Universal Wireless Probe in March 2025 without subscription fees, targeting decentralized and individual-clinician use cases.

Segment performance is shaped by a practical divide between high-complexity imaging and high-distribution imaging. Trolley-based systems retain an advantage where multi-probe versatility, workflow integration, and extended use justify higher capital spending. Handheld systems, in contrast, are shifting deployment from department-level assets toward clinician-, clinic-, and field-level tools. The resulting market does not suggest a simple substitution cycle; it points to different purchasing criteria by care setting.
Obstetrics & gynecology, cardiology, and emergency medicine provide the strongest established application base because each combines repeatable protocols with a clear consequence for timing of care. The next incremental revenue opportunity lies in converting handheld access into governed utilization through training, archiving, and specialty-specific AI. Suppliers that can deliver this operating layer will have an advantage in ASCs and clinics, where portability alone is insufficient to secure institutional adoption.
