This market covers durable tubed, tubeless, and automated insulin delivery (AID) systems, together with replacement accessories such as infusion sets, reservoirs, cartridges, batteries, insertion devices, and patch pods. It excludes insulin pharmaceuticals that are not delivered through a pump and non-pump diabetes-management products. Market expansion no longer depends only on initial hardware adoption. The insulin pump market is shifting from a hardware replacement market toward a therapy-platform market through 2035. AID algorithms, continuous glucose monitoring integration, and remote data tools raise the value of each installed device because they improve the clinical relevance of the platform after the initial sale. That shift also increases the strategic weight of accessories and software updates, rather than eliminating the importance of device design. Type 2 diabetes will provide the largest incremental patient pool, but reimbursement decisions-not clinical need alone-will determine how quickly that pool converts to pump revenue after 2027.
Key Drivers
Rising Prevalence of Diabetes. More than 537 million adults live with diabetes globally, and the International Diabetes Federation projects that figure will reach 783 million by 2045. [1] Type 1 diabetes remains the established pump population because patients require continuous exogenous insulin. The larger commercial change is the extension of pump therapy to insulin-dependent Type 2 patients with suboptimal control on basal-bolus injections. Prevalence growth increases the potential treatment pool, but coverage and affordability determine realized adoption. Demand therefore grows fastest where rising disease burden coincides with payer support and specialist capacity.
Technological Advancements in Insulin Pumps. MiniMed 780G and Tandem Control-IQ represent the move from conventional open-loop delivery toward hybrid closed-loop control. Favorable Device Insurance and Reimbursement Policies. Medicare coverage in the United States spans tubed and tubeless systems, including newer automated platforms. Germany and France have expanded medical-device coverage lists after health technology assessments of hybrid closed-loop systems. Reimbursement converts clinical suitability into an addressable commercial population because pumps carry both an upfront hardware cost and recurrent consumable expense. Coverage expansions therefore influence device adoption and the longer-duration accessory revenue attached to each user.
Increasing Healthcare Expenditure. Higher spending on outpatient diabetes management supports investment in technologies intended to improve glycemic control and reduce complication-related hospitalization. Manufacturers that reduce the economic burden of consumables while maintaining algorithm performance will have a stronger path into emerging markets and insulin-dependent Type 2 populations.
Insulin Pump Market Segment Analysis
By Product
Devices. Devices accounted for 84.5% of market revenue in 2025 and will expand at a 12.4% CAGR through 2035. The segment includes conventional tubed systems, tubeless platforms, and AID or hybrid closed-loop systems. Medtronic’s MiniMed 780G and Tandem’s t:slim X2 with Control-IQ retain value through installed-base upgrades and algorithm releases, while tubeless systems gain disproportionate share among new users. Premium AID hardware commands a 30-50% price premium over conventional open-loop pumps. Hardware demand therefore reflects both first-time adoption and upgrades from older systems.
Conventional Devices-Tubed/Tethered. Tubed pumps remain important where users value established clinical workflows, reservoir capacity, and familiarity with legacy platforms. MiniMed 780G and t:slim X2 illustrate how established hardware can remain commercially current through advanced algorithms and software-update capability. The tubed category retains a substantial installed base, especially in North America and Europe. Its principal competitive pressure comes from patch-pump convenience rather than a loss of clinical relevance. Through 2035, tubed systems will remain material in complex care settings and among patients who prefer proven device routines.
Conventional Devices-Tubeless. Tubeless patch pumps adhere directly to the skin and remove external catheter tubing, improving discretion and activity compatibility for many users. OmniPod DASH, OmniPod 5, YpsoPump, EOPatch, TouchCare, and Kaleido represent the product diversity forming in this category. Design differentiation is increasingly tied to adhesive wear, disposable-pod economics, smartphone control, and compatibility with glucose-monitoring systems. Primary research conducted across 42 endocrinologists and certified diabetes educators in eight North American and Western European countries in Q3 2025 found that 68% preferred tubeless platforms as a first prescription for adults starting pump therapy. Automated Insulin Delivery System/Hybrid Closed Loop. AID systems link pump hardware, continuous glucose monitoring, and dosing algorithms that adjust insulin delivery at short intervals. MiniMed 780G, Control-IQ, OmniPod 5, iLet Bionic Pancreas, mylife CamAPS FX, and TouchCare demonstrate a market moving toward interoperable, software-led therapy. By Indication
Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes accounted for 77.4% of market revenue in 2025 and will grow at 11.9% CAGR through 2035. The indication remains the core pump population because autoimmune beta-cell destruction makes continuous exogenous insulin essential. MiniMed 780G, Control-IQ, and OmniPod 5 concentrate premium AID revenue within this group. United States, United Kingdom, and German clinical guidance supports pump therapy where clinical criteria are met. The segment will remain the revenue anchor, although its share will decline gradually as Type 2 diabetes broadens the customer base.
Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes represented 22.6% of revenue in 2025 and will expand at the market-leading 14.6% CAGR. CeQur Simplicity offers a three-day wearable format for mealtime insulin, while Medtrum’s TouchCare offers a lower-cost route to automated delivery. These formats reduce the programming burden associated with Type 1-oriented systems. Germany and Australia are extending reimbursement for eligible Type 2 patients under defined criteria. The indication’s growth depends on payer recognition that better control and simpler delivery can justify recurring device expenditure.
By End Use
Home Care. Home care generated 58.1% of 2025 revenue and will advance at 13.0% CAGR through 2035. OmniPod 5, t:slim X2 with Control-IQ, and MiniMed 780G support autonomous use through smartphone applications and cloud synchronization. Remote review allows diabetes teams to assess therapy without continuous in-person supervision. North America
North America held 42.7% of global revenue in 2025 and will expand at 11.7% CAGR through 2035. The U.S. drives regional demand through high Type 1 pump penetration, Medicare Part B coverage, and private insurance access. Insulet leads through OmniPod, while Tandem targets the 18-45 age group through direct and distributor channels. Europe
Europe accounted for 25.2% of 2025 revenue and will grow at 12.0% CAGR through 2035. Germany and the UK are the largest country markets, supported by national reimbursement structures. Germany’s Federal Joint Committee expanded hybrid closed-loop eligibility under Social Code Book V through 2022 and 2023. The UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommended hybrid closed-loop systems for people with Type 1 diabetes in June 2024, expanding the reimbursable population. China. China is the region’s largest national market, combining a large diabetes population with support for domestic medical-device manufacturing. Premium international systems coexist with domestic alternatives, producing a dual-tier structure. Japan. Japan represents a technologically advanced market in which national insurance covers pump systems for Type 1 diabetes. Terumo uses established Japanese and Asia Pacific distribution infrastructure to address hospital and home-care demand. The top five companies held approximately 75% of global insulin pump revenue in 2025, making the market moderately concentrated. Insulet holds the leading position through the OmniPod franchise, including OmniPod 5 and OmniPod DASH. Medtronic maintains a substantial global installed base through MiniMed 780G, hospital relationships, Guardian continuous glucose monitoring integration, and CareLink data management. Tandem competes through the software-updatable t:slim X2 and Control-IQ platform. Ypsomed has strengthened its European position through YpsoPump and the CamDiab partnership, while Roche maintains a European presence through Accu-Chek Solo and Accu-Chek Insight.
