Micro-irrigation System Market Size

The global micro-irrigation system market was valued at USD 9.9 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 9.7% between 2025 and 2034. The market for micro-irrigation systems is expanding due to the growing need for food security and increased population.

Micro-irrigation Systems Market

According to a U.S. Geological Survey report, agriculture is a major user of ground and surface water in the United States, and irrigation accounted for 42 percent of the Nation’s total freshwater withdrawals. Water applied as irrigation allows for crop production in arid regions and supplements soil moisture in humid regions when growing season precipitation is insufficient. Irrigation has enhanced both the productivity and profitability of the agricultural sector.

According to the Census of Agriculture, farms with some form of irrigation accounted for more than 54 percent of the total value of U.S. crop sales, while irrigated land accounted for less than 20 percent of harvested cropland. Irrigated crop production helps to support local rural economies in many areas of the U.S., and contributes to the Nation’s livestock, food processing, transportation, and energy sectors. The Government across the regions launched a Centrally Sponsored Scheme on Micro Irrigation, with an objective to increase the area under improved methods of irrigation for better water use efficiency to provide stimulus to agricultural growth.

The census of Agriculture reported total U.S. irrigated cropland at 58 million acres. Much of the irrigated land is concentrated in the western U.S. where the production of many crops requires irrigation. Irrigation is also common in the southeastern U.S., particularly along the Mississippi River Valley in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee as well as southern Georgia and central Florida. Where irrigation occurs depends on regional cropping patterns, local climatic conditions as well as the availability of surface and groundwater resources.

Nebraska had the most irrigated land among all U.S. States, with 8.6 million acres of irrigated cropland, accounting for 14.8 percent of all irrigated cropland in the United States. The prevalence of irrigated acreage in Nebraska relates to the abundance of groundwater resources as much of the state overlies the High Plains (Ogallala) aquifer. California ranked second, with 7.8 million acres, or 13.5 percent of all U.S. irrigated cropland; Arkansas, Texas, and Idaho rounded out the top 5 States in total irrigated cropland acreage. The twenty highest-ranked States in irrigated acreage accounted for about 90 percent of all irrigated land.

Micro-irrigation System Market Trends

  • Ineffective usage of water over or under-irrigation results in wastage of resources and stress to the crops. Crop and soil sensors give real-time readings regarding moisture content in soil, water requirement of crops, and other environmental aspects. Technological advancements overcome these problems by way of precision and micro irrigation systems, soil sensors among others.

  • These sensors use advanced sensing technologies like capacitance sensors, tensiometers, or spectral analysis. This enables precise monitoring of soil moisture content, temperature, and nutrient levels. Such Internet of Things (IoT)-sourced data enables farmers to make informed irrigation decisions and implement precise schedules based on the specific needs of the crops and soil.

  • US startup innov8.ag boosts cotton and field crop yields by using data-driven soil and crop monitoring. Its Green Atlas Cartographer is a hardware and software solution that tells growers what thinning is required in accordance with fruit and flower numbers. Further, the startup's platform offers irrigation planning insight in terms of determining watering requirements and soil types.

  • Additionally, the EU and UNDP launched a solar-powered drip irrigation system for local households. The capacity of this solar powered irrigation system can be sufficient for the irrigation of 3 hectares of land, potentially benefiting 20 more households.

Micro-irrigation System Market Analysis

Micro-irrigation System Market Size, By System Type, 2021 - 2034 (USD Billion)

Based on the system type, the micro-irrigation system market is divided into drip irrigation system, sprinkler irrigation system and others. In 2024, the sprinkler irrigation system dominated the market, generating revenue of USD 5.6 billion and expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.1% during the forecast period.

  • Technological advancements have enabled precise control over drip irrigation. Farmers can customize specific parameters such as irrigation timing, duration, and water flow rate depending on crop requirements and weather conditions. Farmers can adapt the system to the watering and nutritional needs of plants.

  • Sensors are the key to the development of smart drip irrigation systems. Sensor-based drip systems incorporate sensing technology to track and optimize water use. Different sensors are employed to track soil water content, plant well-being, weather, and other conditions that influence the watering needs of plants. Soil sensors provide data about soil moisture content, which helps farmers adjust their irrigation schedule accordingly. These sensors can be wired or wireless and can connect to a central controller or cloud-based system.

  • The ongoing innovations in drip irrigation systems are changing agriculture and encouraging sustainable and precision agriculture. A designed drip irrigation system saves water, saves energy, saves on the environment, saves time, and enhances crop production. The market is expecting more improvements in the future that optimize water usage, save resources, and optimize agriculture efficiency.
