An endoscope is an optical, illuminated, tubular instrument used to access or view the inside of the human body. It is used for diagnostic and surgical purposes. Endoscopic surgery is typically less invasive, require less time to recover, and results in minimal scarring. Endoscopes also see applications in obtaining samples for biopsies. Neuroendoscopy procedure refers to the process of taking samples of brain tissue for diagnosis, excision of tumours, or remove fluid from fluid-filled spaces of the brain. The instruments are generally inserted through small incisions in the skull, mouth, or nose. Some of the diseases being treated using neuroendoscopy are hydrocephalus, colloid and arachnoid cysts, tumours of pituitary, skull base, and acoustic neuromas.

The first neuroendoscopic surgery was performed in 1910 to treat hydrocephalus with limited success. Crude instruments and poor illumination impeded the progress. New technology such as fibreoptic has advanced the field of neuroendoscopy by providing bright and high-resolution endoscopes. These advancements have renewed the interest of neurosurgeons in the field, and now these products are considered in neuro-oncology for sampling and excising tumours. As sophistication of devices continues to grow, the market will flourish.
Rising demand for minimally invasive surgical procedures to propel the industry growth
Neuroendoscopes remove tumours through smaller incisions in the skull, mouth, or nose and reduce surgical trauma. Additionally, the use of modern diagnostic tools, visual equipment and surgical instruments will enhance patient health. Hence, an increase in preference for minimally invasive surgical procedures will foster the market growth in the coming years. Advancements and innovations in minimally invasive technologies have resulted in the rise of number of surgeries using such technologies. These factors will augment the demand and adoption of neuroendoscopies, enhancing the neuroendoscopy procedure market over the forecast period. Moreover, these devices will see application in hydrocephalus treatment as alternatives to shunts, thereby fostering the market expansion.
However, the high cost associated with the devices and surgeries will be a major barrier to market expansion. Moreover, a lack of skilled surgeons in the developing markets will be another factor responsible for sluggish market growth, especially in developing regions.
Increasing prevalence of brain tumors will result in increased demand for neurosurgery
A rise in number of brain tumour cases across the globe will result in a rise in demand and adoption of neuroendoscopy procedures, thereby expanding the neuroendoscopy market outlook. Several risk factors such as exposure to radiation and family history of brain tumours has increased the risk of a brain tumour. According to the National Cancer institute, around 23,000 new brain cancer cases were diagnosed in the U.S. alone and nearly 165,000 individuals were afflicted with brain and other nervous system cancers in the U.S. Additionally, a rising number of cases in the Asian countries will pave market growth opportunities. Hence, rising brain cancer cases will significantly impact the neuroendoscopy industry development.
Increasing application of rigid endoscopes in intraventricular procedures will boost the segment growth

The product segment is divided in rigid and flexible neuroendoscopes. Rigid endoscopes are like tubular telescopes, while their flexible counterparts consist of flexible fibres. Growing emergence of rigid fibrescopes and videoscopes will drive the product demand across the market. These instruments enable visualization of the affected area when passed through a natural bodily orifice such as the mouth, or the anus. Compared to flexible neuroendoscopes, rigid endoscopes occupied nearly 68% market share in the global neuroendoscopy market. Increasing application of these rigid endoscopes in intraventricular neuroendoscopy, and emergence of novel products in the industry will foster the market expansion over the forecast period.
Improvements in preoperative imaging to make transcranial neuroendoscopy the fastest growing segment
Neuroendoscopy industry, by application is segmented into transnasal neuroendoscopy, intraventricular neuroendoscopy, and transcranial neuroendoscopy. Transcranial neuroendoscopy is used in visualization of ventricles and structures within the brain. It has a rigid and robust scope sheath that can be used as a dissector without bending the scope. This segment is poised to witness around 5% CAGR during the forecast timeframe. Improvements in preoperative imaging will allow neurosurgeons to plan and treat complicated cases through less invasive procedures. Hence, an increase in applications of transcranial procedures will positively impact industry growth.
Decreased risk of infection due to disposable neuroendoscopes will drive segment growth
By usability, the global neuroendoscopy market is segmented into reusable and disposable neuroendoscopes. The disposable neuroendoscopes segment was valued around USD 22 million in 2018. Disposable neuroendoscopes are a low-cost alternative over reusable devices. They reduce the risk of infection as they are intended for a one-time use. The low-cost alternatives will also see usage in the developing markets where cost of treatment is a big barrier. Due to these factors, the disposable segment is poised to witness a significant growth over the forecast period.
Growing number of pediatric tumor cases to boost pediatric segment growth
The neuroendoscopy industry by patient is segmented into adult and pediatric patients. The adult segment continues to dominate the neuroendoscopy market share while pediatric patient segment will witness a significant growth at 6.5% CAGR over the forecast period. Increasing number of skilled pediatric neurosurgeons and growing number of tumor cases among the pediatric population will drive the market demand.
Increasing number of skilled healthcare professionals to make hospitals a lucrative segment
Neuroendoscopy device market by end use is segmented into hospitals, ambulatory surgical centres, diagnostic centres, and others. The hospital segment held maximum market share and is forecasted to show momentous growth over the coming years. In 2018, the segment was valued around USD 68 million. Due to the factors such as state-of-the-art facilities in the hospitals, insurance coverage to patients, increasing number of neuro surgeries and the presence of skilled healthcare professionals will drive the market trends.
