They find their application mostly in decking, landscape, railroads, utility poles and fencing industry. Copper plating, heat treatment and mud treatment are some of new methods for wood preservation but their application is very limited.
The oil borne preservatives have strong petrochemical odour and mostly find their use in industrial purpose. Commonly used oil borne preservatives are coal tar creosote, linseed oil. The water borne preservatives have water soluble compounds of copper like copper azole, copper chrome arsenic, alkaline copper quaternary. The solvent borne preservatives like light organic solvent preservative are mixture of fungicides, insecticides and water repellent chemicals.
The method of application of the chemicals is either by pressure or by non-pressure method. Pressure process is the one in which chemical is applied through pressure or vacuum. It is better than non-pressure application as penetration is deeper and more uniform. The penetration and retention can be easily varied through controlling the process. Some of the pressure methods are fuel-cell process, fluctuation pressure process and high-pressure sap displacement process. In non-pressure process, there is no role of pressure. Chemical can be applied through brushing, spraying, steeping, soaking, dipping, preservative precipitation, kyanizing and gedrain’s bath.
Discouragement for cutting tress by government to reduce deforestation may restrain wood preserving chemicals market as reduction in timber usage. There has been significant development for alternate of logs in the construction industry such as plastic copses, and autoclaves, aerated concrete. This has resulted in reduction in the use of timber preserving compounds. The wood preserving chemicals market has been under scrutiny due to toxicity of compounds which leads to problems in workers such as itching, burning rashes, breathing problems, headache, and nausea etc.
Asia Pacific led by China has significant share owing to rapid industrial growth. China is the major producer as well as the consumer of the preservative chemical. This region is expected to show steady market growth.
