Industry Trends

Peracetic Acid Market size was over USD 485 million in 2016 and is anticipated to witness growth at a CAGR of 7.7% over the projected timeframe.

Europe peracetic acid market size, by end-user, 2013 - 2024 (USD Million)

Peracetic acid market growth is propelled by its increased demand in food and beverage industry. The global peracetic acid market in food and beverage industry was valued at USD 139.5 million in 2016. It also has applications in water treatment facilities. Peracetic acid is environment-friendly and safe as it gets decomposed into oxygen and acetic acid, which has augmented its market growth.

The increasing water pollution throughout the world due to growing population and industrialization is a grave issue in today’s era, making water treatment a necessity. This will propel the demand for peracetic acid in the treatment of water. Increasing the post-harvest life of horticultural products is also a key factor that can drive the demand for this product.

The product is considered as green and sustainable due to its properties. It rarely needs to be neutralized before discharging due to its short half-life. It has much lesser toxicity levels as compared to alternative disinfectants, making it beneficial for marine organisms. The soil quality is not degraded if it is applied to soil and does not have a lasting impact on it. It does not produce halogenated by-products. All these factors have escalated the demand for the product.

The product can cause irritation in the eyes, skin, and respiratory system, restricting its use in future. Long-term exposure to the product can permanently damage lungs and cause asthma in some cases. In the U.S., EPA has published Acute Exposure Guidelines for the product.

Peracetic Acid Market, By Product

Solution grade and distilled grade are the two types of this product available commercially. Solution grade peracetic acid is an equilibrium mixture of hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid with a catalyst to drive the reaction. The commonly used catalyst is sulfuric acid. On the other hand, distilled grade peracetic acid contains less than 0.5 % hydrogen peroxide and about 1-3 % of acetic acid. Distilled grade product contains water and peracetic acid with minimal traces of starting materials. Solution grade is widely used in most of the applications of peracetic acid and holds the major share in the market

Peracetic Acid Market, By End-user

The global peracetic acid market size for food and beverages dominated the market in 2016 and is estimated to grow at a significant rate. The industry has witnessed a robust growth in the food and beverages segment owing to the changing consumer lifestyle dynamics. The product is an effective sterilant against several bacteria, viruses, fungi, and yeasts. Peracetic acid is widely used as a sanitizer in the brewing industry as it is highly effective against microbial contamination. 100 ppm per application on vegetables, tree nuts, fruits, cereals, spices, and herbs is allowed and solutions of less than 500 ppm can be applied to the equipment. Due to the slime formation in the paper industry, the costs incurred are high, which can be reduced with the use of peracetic acid. The protected horticulture segment is expected to maintain sanitation when growing vegetables in a controlled environment. As the product does not produce any foam, it has been in use for irrigation purposes, further intensifying the demand for the product in agriculture.

The global pulp and paper bleaching segment of peracetic acid market also registered a decent growth between 2017 and 2024. The product is also used in bleaching fiber as it does minimal damage and provides a better whitening effect as compared to hypochlorite bleaching. The consumption of optical brighteners and biocides in bleaching is reduced with improved retention of chemicals, resulting in lower costs in pulp and paper manufacturing process. Water treatment is forecast to witness growth at a significant rate of over 7% over the forecast time span. Peracetic acid is used as a disinfectant for recycled water used for rinsing food products.

Peracetic Acid Market, By Region

Asia Pacific is expected to display the highest growth rate over the forecast period due to emerging economies such as India and China. The growing health concerns in the developing countries will boost the market. North America peracetic acid market size was estimated to be over USD 176.3 million in 2016 and is expected to grow at a robust rate. The prominent growth in the regional end-user segments, such as water treatment and pulp and paper bleaching, has noticeably stimulated the overall product demand. In Europe, the market revenues for agriculture segment will also accelerate at a rapid pace during 2017 to 2024. Presence of application industries in the region will drive the peracetic acid market. The product market in Middle East and Africa is projected to display healthy growth in the forecast timespan.

Competitive Market Share

Peracetic acid market share is highly consolidated with top product manufacturers accounting for over 94% of the overall market. Other small and medium scale manufacturers also have good opportunities to make profits. Key product manufacturers in peracetic acid market include Ecolab, Inc., Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc., Diversey, Inc., Kemira Oyj, Evonik Industries, Acuro Organics Ltd., Thai Peroxide Ltd., PeroxyChem LLC, Solvay S.A., Enviro Tech Chemical Services, Inc., Loeffler Chemical Corporation, Hydrite Chemical Co., Airedale Chemical Company Ltd., etc. Ecolab Inc. expanded its innovation to oil wells, where peracetic acid is used to kill bacteria for improving the quality of water.

Peracetic Acid Industry Background

Peracetic acid is a colorless organic compound, which is highly corrosive and is also known as peroxyacetic acid or PAA. It is produced by one-step or two-step liquid phase oxidation of acetaldehyde, or vapor phase oxidation of acetaldehyde. The chief constituents used for its production are acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Its formulation can contain lesser or greater concentrations of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide depending on the requirements of the end-user. The increased demand for the product across various applications has led to the peracetic acid market growth.
