Marine Scrubber Systems Market Size

Marine Scrubber Systems Market was valued at more than USD 7.2 billion in 2023 and is estimated to register over 9.6% CAGR from 2024 to 2032. Growing requirement to reduce the impact of shipping emissions, primarily in emission control areas (ECAs) coupled with increasing requirement to comply with the environment regulations comprising of International Maritime Organization's (IMO) sulfur cap regulations under MARPOL Annex VI, is set to influence the industry trends.

Marine Scrubber Systems Market

Ongoing research and development in scrubber technology aimed to address challenges, improve efficiency, and reduce the environmental impact of scrubber systems will drive the product adoption. In addition, advancements in hybrid scrubbers and other innovative technologies aimed to provide more options and flexibility for ship operators will drive the business scenario.

COVID- 19 Impact

The COVID- 19 pandemic led to disruptions in global supply chains, affecting the manufacturing and delivery of various components and equipment, including marine scrubber systems. Delays in production and logistics could have impacted the installation timelines for some vessels. The pandemic caused significant fluctuations in oil and fuel prices, thereby affecting the product demand. However, growing adoption of cleaner technologies to reduce the emissions by traditional marine fuels will influence the business statistics.

Marine Scrubber Systems Market Trends

Several international and regional regulations aim to reduce the environmental impact of shipping emissions, particularly sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions. Growing requirement to use low-sulfur fuels (compliant fuels with sulfur content not exceeding 0.5%) along with designation of Emission Control Areas (ECAs) with even stricter sulfur emission limits can impact the product demand. Additionally, ongoing research and development focuses on developing materials that can withstand the corrosive nature of exhaust gases and the scrubbing process, leading to improved durability and longer lifespan for scrubber systems, thereby contributing to product penetration.

Marine Scrubber Systems Market Analysis

Marine Scrubber Systems Market Size, By Fuel, 2021-2032 (USD Billion)

The hybrid scrubber systems will attain gains at nearly 9.5% up to 2032. The use of hybrid fuels allows ship operators to meet and exceed increasingly stringent environmental regulations, including sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission limits.  The Hybrid fuel systems provide flexibility by allowing ships to switch between different fuel sources based on factors such as cost, availability, and regulatory requirements, thereby stimulating the business statistics. Moreover, diversifying the fuel mix enhances energy security and reduces dependency on a single fuel source, thereby augmenting the business landscape.

The commercial marine scrubber systems market size cross USD 5 billion by 2032. Commercial shipping involves diverse routes and trade patterns. The ability of marine scrubbers to operate in different modes (open-loop, closed-loop, or hybrid) provides operational flexibility. Retrofitting of the existing vessels with marine scrubbers further allows shipowners to upgrade their fleets to meet regulatory requirements, thereby enhancing the product demand.

Marine Scrubber Systems Market Share, By Type, 2023

The wet technology segment is predicted to showcase about 9% growth rate from 2024 to 2032. Hybrid scrubbers are designed to operate in both open-loop and closed-loop modes, providing greater flexibility to ship operators. This flexibility allows vessels to adapt to varying environmental conditions and comply with different regulatory requirements. In addition, by offering the ability to switch between modes, hybrid scrubbers allow ships to use seawater for scrubbing in open waters and switch to a closed-loop system in environmentally sensitive areas, thereby stimulating the business statistics.

Asia Pacific Marine Scrubber Systems Market Size, By Application, 2022-2032 (USD Billion)

Asia Pacific marine scrubber systems market is set register more than 8.5% CAGR through 2032. The region is characterized by diverse economic conditions and varying fuel price dynamics. Fluctuations in fuel prices influence the economic feasibility of installing marine scrubbers, thereby influencing the product adoption. Growing operational needs of vessels, including considerations for compliance with emission regulations along with adoption of scrubber systems across large container ships to coastal vessels, will sway the market trends.

Furthermore, economic growth and increasing trade volumes in the region contribute to higher demand for maritime transportation, which will augment the industry dynamics. Ongoing compliance with regional ECAs will continue to drive the adoption of scrubbers in vessels operating in these areas. For instance, specific areas in the region including the Pearl River Delta in China, continue to implement local emission control areas with stricter sulfur emission limits.

Marine Scrubber Systems Industry News

  • In March 2023, Wärtsilä received its first order for 35 MW carbon capture and storage ready scrubber systems to be delivered in 2023. The open loop configuration of the system involves additional design and engineering work to guarantee the full CCS system on the vessels. Moreover, these scrubbers will be designed for integration with a Particulate Matter filter.

  • In July 2021, Alfa Laval along with Japan’s National Maritime Research Institute (NMRI), designed the CO2 capture testing project to provide real world validation with Alfa Laval’s PureSOX. The scope was restricted to show that the scrubber could perform the CO2 capture on board. Similarly, the modified PureSOx system absorbs CO2 from the auxiliary diesel engines in port, while operating in closed loop.
