Amorphous polymer is added to the product in order to achieve transparency.
Bullet resistance glass is tested by firing projectile through a gun from specific distance and at specific speed. Based on the depth of dent and penetration of projectile, study is done for requirement of thickness and material of construction. Construction material depends on type of service and protection level needed that may vary from thermoplastics, polycarbonate, clad polycarbonate and acrylic.
Huge fabrication cost is one of the major barrier in bullet resistance glass market growth. It is mainly due to rising cost of raw materials. The property gets affected by temperature and exposure to UV radiations (from sunlight). With time, the polycarbonate becomes brittle due to presence of amorphous polymer. When tested below -7° C, the inner polycarbonate layer cracks and moves backwards. Varying regulatory guidelines for material requirement and changes proposed by green councils for environment protection further restricts the product demand.
