Bullet Resistance Glass Market size shall witness growth owing to its use in automotive, defence and marine industry. Increasing crime rate and terrorist activities, has increased the concern for safety of people. Robberies and thefts at banks, ATM kiosks, jewellery shops and cash carrying vans have escalated. Further security concerns have augmented with the expansion in the banking sector and ATM booths.
Automobile sector is a major end use in bullet resistance glass market owing to growth in premium vehicles usage and demand for value added products has increased the product consumption. Automobile industry has grown at a CAGR of above 4.5% in last seven years that is expected to propel bullet resistance glass market in forecast period.
Bullet resistance often referred to as bulletproof or ballistic glass is an optically transparent but strong material having high resistance against penetration. To achieve the transparency, clear & undistorted view, index of refraction for layer of glasses must be almost same. Its thickness may vary from 19 to 89 mm (0.75 to 3.5 inches).
It is combination of two or more layers, one being soft and the other one hard. Hard layer flattens the bullet while softer layer is elastic that absorbs energy and flexes instead of getting shattered thus preventing the spall. The protection may be enhanced with increase in number of layers. Primary aim during its construction is appearance and clarity along with protection. Amorphous polymer is added to the product in order to achieve transparency.
Bullet resistance glass is tested by firing projectile through a gun from specific distance and at specific speed. Based on the depth of dent and penetration of projectile, study is done for requirement of thickness and material of construction. Construction material depends on type of service and protection level needed that may vary from thermoplastics, polycarbonate, clad polycarbonate and acrylic.
Huge fabrication cost is one of the major barrier in bullet resistance glass market growth. It is mainly due to rising cost of raw materials. The property gets affected by temperature and exposure to UV radiations (from sunlight). With time, the polycarbonate becomes brittle due to presence of amorphous polymer. When tested below -7° C, the inner polycarbonate layer cracks and moves backwards. Varying regulatory guidelines for material requirement and changes proposed by green councils for environment protection further restricts the product demand.
Based on application, bullet resistance glass market is segmented into bank security, display cases, ATM booths, residential buildings, premium vehicles and armoured cash trucks. The bank security glass and ATM booths have significant market share owing to high requirement of safety and security and constant increase in banking network.
North America, led by the U.S. has significant share in global bullet resistance glass market attributing to increased crime rate and flourishing defence industry. Defence industry is anticipated to grow around 3.2 % in next five years with an aim to strengthen US military. Europe led by Germany has substantial share owing to well established automobile industry hosting big players such as Audi and Volkswagen.
Asia Pacific has moderate share in bullet resistance glass market and expected to increase with recent infrastructure development and use of product in buildings. Further presence of some prominent players such as Asahi and Nippon has augmented the product availability. Latin America and Middle East & Africa have nascent share with their use in security systems.
Major players of global bullet resistance glass market are Asahi, Saint Gobain, Taiwan Glass, China Glass Holding, Nippon Sheet, PPG Industries, Sisecam and Guardian Industries. Saint Gobain has adopted merger and acquisition strategy in order to increase market share. It has acquired raw material producing companies namely British Plaster Board and Grindwell Norton that has reduced its overall production costs.
